Industries · Home services & contractors

The business that answers first usually gets the job.

Home services marketing is unusual because the top of the funnel is rarely the problem. Calls come in. Forms get filled. Then somebody is under a house, the phone rings out, and the homeowner calls the next name on the list. Fixing that costs less than advertising and produces more.

What's different

What decides these jobs.

Urgency compresses the decision

A failed air conditioner in August is not a considered purchase. The homeowner calls two or three numbers and books whoever answers and can come soonest. Ranking first is worth very little if the phone goes to voicemail.

Seasonality is brutal here

HVAC in a desert summer, pool service year round, landscape in the shoulder seasons. Demand does not arrive evenly, and the businesses that struggle are usually the ones marketing at the same intensity in every month.

Trust signals do the qualifying

Licence number, insurance, service area and real photos of finished work. Homeowners are letting a stranger into the house, so anything that looks vague reads as risk, and vague is the default state of most contractor websites.

Recurring beats one-off

Pool, landscape and maintenance contracts are worth many times a single call-out. Marketing that only chases new leads and ignores retention leaves the most profitable part of the business untouched.

You are probably not short of leads. You are losing the ones you get.

Before spending another dollar on advertising, count what happened to last month's inquiries. How many were answered within an hour. How many quotes went out. How many of those got a second contact when the customer went quiet. In most trades businesses that audit finds more recoverable revenue than any campaign would have produced.

Questions we get

About marketing a trades business.

Should I run Google Ads?

Often yes for urgent-need work, but only after the phone gets answered reliably. Paying for clicks that go to voicemail is the most expensive mistake in this industry, and it is extremely common.

How do I get more reviews?

Ask at the moment the job is finished and the customer is happy, and make it one tap rather than a paragraph of instructions. The businesses that struggle are almost always asking occasionally rather than asking badly.

Is it worth marketing in the slow season?

Yes, differently. Slow months are when you build rankings, reviews and content that pay off when demand spikes, and when advertising is cheapest. Switching everything off and restarting each year means permanently starting from behind.

My competitors are cheaper. What do I do?

Compete on certainty rather than price. Answering fast, arriving when you said, licence and insurance visible, and a wall of recent reviews justifies a higher price to most homeowners. Racing to the bottom against someone with lower overheads is a losing game.
